Also a short walk away is Mahawella Beach’s two-kilometre stretch that reaches towards a prominent palm-topped headland in the distance. Staffed by an excellent team of six, this piece of paradise near Tangalle features plenty of living space, an amazing infinity swimming pool and glorious tropical garden overlooking a wide sandy bay. Nearby is the Mulgirigala rock temple, an important Buddhist site, which dates back over 2000 years. Guests can also take a safari in Yala National Park where you can see leopards, elephants, sloth bears, wild boar, buffalos and pythons or visit the Bundala Nature Reserve, famous for its abundant birdlife.

The accommodation is in two houses, a one-bedroom villa at the top of the garden and the main villa, a more spacious three-bedroom house. Both houses are charmingly rustic with lots of character. The Interiors feature sandstone coloured walls, turquoise doors and windows, plus lots of local art and sculptures.

The salt water infinity pool sits between two-spacious pavilions for dining and relaxing outdoors. One pavilion has a built-in sofa seating for relaxing in the shade (ideal for yoga too), while the other is for dining and admiring the beautiful sunset views. The dining pavilion is larger, with a dining table seating twelve, a sitting area, and a bar that leads into a fully-equipped kitchen. This pavilion has the added convenience of a downstairs bathroom, while the other pavilion is next to an outdoor shower under a mangrove tree. The garden leads down through a private turquoise door to the secluded Seenimodera Bay. The villa also comes with two very friendly pet dogs.

Main House

Ground Floor

A wide passageway on the ground floor takes you directly through the building from the rear entrance to the lawned garden at the front, with seating and built in sofas topped with turquoise cushions. Leading off to the right is a cosy sitting room/study with rattan chaise longue and sofa seating, a satellite TV and DVD player, plus cabinets with movies, books and board games. As this room also has an en suite bathroom with shower it can also be used as a bedroom for a less mobile guest.

First Floor

On the first floor are three stylish bedrooms that open onto a shared sea-view balcony furnished with cushioned rattan chairs. Although the bedrooms at either end are slightly larger than the middle one, all three are furnished with king-sized four-poster beds (fitted with mosquito nets) plus either a single day bed or chaise longue that could be used to sleep an extra child. The first bedroom has air conditioning, and they all benefit from the overhead fans and sea breezes. Folding doors open widely to welcome the views, and the en suite bathrooms feature designer basins, wardrobes and expansive open-air shower areas.

Smaller (1 bedroom) house

Accessed via a little bridge, the fourth bedroom has its own wrap-around balcony, furnished with a double sun lounger, turquoise cushioned sofa seating, and a circular dining table overlooking the bay. The bedroom is furnished with an empire-sized bed and a huge Dutch chest as well as a chaise longue (that could be used as a child’s bed). Running parallel to the room is a passageway leading to a mini bar, WC and a big open-air shower courtyard with garden. Below the house is a fixed open-air massage table where guests can enjoy a professional massage.

The staff includes Sylvester, the House Manager and an exceptional chef. Meal choices can be discussed with Sylvester daily. There are also 3 house attendants and 2 gardeners/pool attendants.
